Jonathan Kusel, Executive Director

Jonathan is the founder and executive director of Sierra Institute for Community and Environment. He received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley where he was visiting scholar and instructor before launching Forest Community Research. Jonathan's research focuses on social indicator use and evaluation, community well-being and assessment, and community-based group processes.

Katie Bagby, Program Associate

Katie comes from a background of community-based research and program development on diverse issues of socio-economic and environmental justice. She received her M.A. in Environmental Sociology and Community Studies from Washington State University. Her current interests include community health, environmental justice and increasing participation of underserved communities in public and civic processes.

Nick Menzies, Program Associate
NMenzies@sierrainstitute.us
Nick has a background in community-based forest management and the linkages between resource management and the livelihoods of communities. He has extensive experience working on these issues in eastern and Southeast Asia as well as in eastern and southern Africa having worked in the past as a Program Officer for the Ford Foundation's programs on Environment and Development in China and then in East Africa. More recently, he has completed a book synthesizing lessons learned from communities managing forests around the world, including the United States.

Beth Rose Middleton, Research Associate

Beth Rose is a research associate for Sierra Institute for Community and Environment and a Ph.D. student in Environmental Science and Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. Her primary interests are in environmental justice, community health, and increasing communication between Native American and mainstream approaches to resource management.

Wendy is the office manager for Sierra Institute for Community and Environment. Wendy has a back ground in teaching ESL and the paralegal fields. She holds a Bachelor's Degree from Whittier College in Spanish and English.

Tina is an intern for the Sierra Institute and a Master's candidate at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Her primary interests include rural education, community health, and sustainable ecosystem management. Tina's past work experience is in wildlife trade policy and ecological education

Kelly is an intern for the Sierra Institute's Center of Forestry. She previously worked as a wildlife technician on the Plumas National Forest and has a Bachelors degree in Environmental Studies from Southern Oregon University.
