Did you know that exploratory drilling is currently underway and new mining ventures are proposed for the areas that once supported the Superior and Engels copper mines? The Moonlight property, which will be the focus of the tour, has recently changed ownership. The new owner is Nevoro Inc., a Canadian mining exploration company.
This day-long tour will begin at the Indian Valley Museum with a history presentation by Norman Lamb, President of the California-Engels Mining Company. Following Mr. Lamb’s history presentation, the Project Geologist for Nevoro will talk about the company’s exploration in the area and discuss the potential for opening a new open-pit copper mine near Lights Creek. Mike Thornton, Mining Project Community Organizer wtih the Sierra Fund, will give a presentation on the toxic legacy of mining in the Sierra Nevada.
After the presentations at the Gem and Mineral Society Museum, the group will board a bus and head out to the Superior Mine to discuss the potential for future mining and implications for the valley. Participants will tour the old Superior Mine site and explore a tunnel into the abandoned mine.
