Lake Almanor Watershed Project: Lake Almanor is one of largest reservoirs in California, feeding the California State Water Project. Scenic beauty, recreation, and lakeside development make the lake a primary economic driver in the Northern Sierra. The Sierra Institute coordinates the Almanor Basin Watershed Advisory Committee (ABWAC), established to advise the Plumas County Board of Supervisors on sustainable management of the watershed. School-Based Telehealth Project in Plumas County: Building on past work with Proyecto Salud, the Sierra Institute, in conjunction with a diverse array of partners, uses community building and collaborative planning to develop a more integrated healthcare system by creating an innovative telehealth program to improve student health and well being, and, in turn, student learning. This networked telehealth program connects students, their families, and schools with local healthcare providers and interpreters using video conferencing equipment to increase access to the local health system. It will provide culturally and linguistically appropriate, accessible healthcare services and education that will reduce health disparities and improve the overall system of care, especially for the underserved.

Greenville High School Natural Resource Program:  The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment is working with Greenville High School (GHS) and partners with a Working Landscapes educational academy at GHS.  This program blends 7-12 grade Math, Science, English and Social Studies classes with natural resource themes and local field studies in order to develop an integrated California standards-based educational program with a rigorous natural resource management program.  A primary goal is to improve student motivation, student learning in all subject areas, and better connect students to their rural home and landscape.  More...

Toxic Legacy of Mining:  Contracted by the Sierra Fund, the Sierra Institute researches how the toxic impacts of historic mining in the Sierra Nevada impact human and environmental health and disproportionately affect underserved and vulnerable populations.
