GEOLOGY Sierra Geology: From Soda Rock to Grizzly DomeRead what happened on the 2011 tour! (pdf)
OverviewExplore the geologic evolution of the Northern Sierra Nevada over the past 300-million years with Feather River College's Dr. Derek Lerch, Environmental Studies. Our tour begins in Taylorsville and will lead us down the North Fork of the Feather River, where the river's erosive properties have created world-class exposure of the region's foundational bedrock. With various stops along the way Dr. Lerch will give us the geologic history of this area.
We'll start out with an introduction to the area's geological status in Taylorsville at the Indian Valley Museum's Gem & Mineral Room. We'll continue to the North Fork Feather River and travel down Highway 70 stopping at various points of interest on the way to Grizzly Dome. Ever stick your finger in a fault? Well here's your chance! We'll see the Melones Fault up close and personal. This fault is considered mainly responsible for the gold in California. We'll discuss meta-volcanic and meta-sedimentary rocks, brittle and/or ductile deformations. Learn about granite, calcium-carbonate and more. We'll also talk a bit about gold and gold mining in the Sierra Nevada and it's legacy to the area when we stop at one of the last stamp mills in the Sierra. We'll lunch in Belden and on our way back to Taylorsville, we'll stop at Soda Rock. This special rock formation not only has unique geological features, but is steeped with Maidu history. You won't want to miss this tour!
